In short: Chinese Stroke Order has no sign-in you create, no advertising, and no ad identifiers. Your preferences and recently practiced characters are stored only on your own device. The app does send anonymous usage statistics — which features are used and whether people come back — and an automatic crash report if it stops working; neither ever includes the characters you look up or your voice. Beyond that, data leaves your device only when you choose to act: when you use voice search (your microphone audio goes to your device's speech recognition, and the recognized text to a Google AI service so the app can work out which character you want), or when you choose to send us feedback by email.
The app saves the following on your device using local storage. None of it is sent to us:
All of the settings above are stored locally on your device (in app preferences on mobile, or in your browser's local storage on the web). We do not operate a user database and we do not upload, sync, or back up this information to any server.
The app requests microphone permission for one purpose: voice search. Voice search is optional, the microphone opens only after you tap the microphone button and closes when the voice search ends, and the app never listens in the background. When you use it:
If you never use voice search, no audio and no text leaves your device.
The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count how the app is used, so we can tell which features are worth keeping and whether anyone comes back. It records anonymous events such as: the app was opened, a character was shown, a stroke animation played through, a voice search was started and whether it resolved, a word was opened, the app was shared, and a return visit on a later day. Alongside those, Google's SDK reports the standard technical context — device model, operating-system version, app version, language, approximate (country-level) location derived from the network, and a random installation identifier it generates.
What the analytics never contain: the characters or words you look up, the text of anything you said or typed, your voice audio, your name, your email, your precise location, or any advertising identifier. The app serves no ads and collects no advertising identifier on either platform: the advertising-ID permission is stripped from the build and the SDK is configured not to collect one. Analytics are reported only from released builds, never from our own development runs.
The app does not currently offer an in-app switch for this; uninstalling it stops all collection. If you would like one, tell us using the contact address below.
To help us find and fix bugs, the mobile app uses Google Firebase Crashlytics. If the app crashes or hits a fatal error, it automatically sends a diagnostic report containing the error and stack trace, your device model and operating-system version, and basic app state at the time of the crash. These reports contain no personal information and none of the characters you practice. Crash reporting applies only to the mobile app — the web version does not use it.
Because all stored data lives on your device, you are always in full control:
The app relies on the following services. Each has its own privacy policy:
See Google's privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
If you choose the in-app "report a problem" option, the app opens your own email app with a message pre-addressed to us and pre-filled with technical details that help us diagnose the issue: the app's region and provider configuration, whether you are on the web or a native app, a timestamp, and recent voice-search diagnostic logs. Those logs may include text the app recognized, but never your voice audio.
Nothing is sent automatically. The message simply waits in your email app, where you can read, edit, or delete any of it before deciding whether to send. If you do send it, we receive your email address and whatever the message contains, and we use them only to respond to and resolve your report.
The "rate the app" option opens your app store's standard in-app rating dialog (Google Play or the App Store). Any rating or review you leave goes to that store under its own privacy policy, not to us. The "share" option opens your device's share sheet with a link to the app so you can pass it to a friend; we do not receive anything when you share.
The app is suitable for learners of all ages, including children learning their first characters. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children: there is no sign-up, no advertising, no ad identifier, and no message, photo, or profile of any kind. The usage analytics and crash reports described above are anonymous and technical, and contain nothing a child types, says, or looks up.
If this policy changes, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
