Privacy Policy · Pyramid Reader
Last updated: 2026-09-26
Pyramid Reader is a Chrome extension that turns the article you are reading into a summary in levels, the conclusion first and the claims, evidence and sentences under it, using an AI model and API key that you supply. It has no server and no accounts. Nothing you read, build or type is sent to us.
What we collect
Nothing. The extension does not collect, store or transmit any personal data, browsing history or page content to the developer or to any third party of ours. It has no analytics, no telemetry and no crash reporting. The only way anything reaches us is a message you choose to send: an issue on the project's repository, or an email.
What leaves your device, and where it goes
The extension sends page text in one case: when you press Build tree, it sends the visible text of the page you opened it on (if it first asks you to click its toolbar icon, the page the tab shows when you click) to the AI provider you configured in Settings, with your own API key, and receives the tree in return. That provider is the extension's only destination for page text, and, with the Settings check below, its only network contact.
- Which provider: the one you chose: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint you named (for example DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, OpenRouter, or a model server running on your own computer). Access to that provider's address is requested from you when you save a key for it, and only for that address. The extension sends no request to any other site.
- What is sent: the paragraphs of the page that are visible to you, as plain text. Text hidden behind a paywall overlay or otherwise not rendered is not read and not sent. Nothing else about you or your browser is included beyond what your browser and that provider's API require.
- The provider's handling of the text and of your key is governed by that provider's own terms and privacy policy, which you agreed to when you obtained the key. We have no access to those requests or their answers.
- Settings also asks your chosen provider, with your saved key, whether it serves the model you typed, when you open Settings and when you save. That request carries no page text.
Reading the tree in another language sends nothing: translation runs on your computer with Chrome's built-in translator. The first time you use a language, Chrome itself downloads that language's translation model from Google, as it does for Chrome's own translation feature; the extension neither sends nor receives anything for it.
The bundled demo article and its tree are shipped inside the extension. Opening the demo sends nothing.
Data stored on your device
Everything below is kept in the extension's local storage in your browser
(chrome.storage.local). It is never synced through your Google account and never
sent to us. Removing the extension deletes it.
- Your settings: the provider, model and endpoint address you chose, and your paint, reading-view and translation-language preferences.
- Your API keys, one per provider address. A key is sent only to the address you saved it for. Keys are never logged and never synced.
- Trees you built. A finished tree is saved so that the same page shows it again without a new request. Each entry holds the page's address, the tree (whose quotes are that page's words), the provider and model that built it, and when it was built and last shown; it is filed under a hash of the page's address and text. The saved trees are therefore a record of the pages you built trees for. They stay on this device; the oldest are dropped as the store fills.
Permissions
Requested at install, the minimal set:
- activeTab / scripting: access to a page starts only when you click the toolbar icon or press the keyboard shortcut on it. The extension then reads the visible text of that page, and of that page loaded again, on your device only, to show the page's title and any tree you saved for it, it highlights the sentence a claim cites, and it keeps the panel in step with where you point, click or scroll on the page, all on your device. When the tab moves to another page its panel closes, and no other page, in that tab or any other, is read until you click the icon there. The extension declares no content script, and none of a page's text leaves your device until you press Build tree.
- sidePanel: the extension's user interface is Chrome's side panel.
- storage: to keep the settings, keys and trees described above, locally.
Requested later, only when you save a key for a provider, and only for that provider's address: permission to contact that address, so the page text can be sent to the provider you chose. Nothing is requested for any other site, and there is no blanket access to all sites.
What the extension never does
- It never sends page text, trees or keys anywhere but to the provider you configured.
- It never reads a web page you have not clicked its icon on, never follows a tab to another page without a new click, and never reads text you cannot see.
- It never shares or publishes a tree; there are no public tree pages and no shared cache.
- It never loads code from the internet; the model's answer is data, drawn by the extension's own code.
Children
The extension is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If the extension ever changes what leaves your device or what it stores, this page and the Chrome Web Store listing are updated first, with the date above.
